Celebración del Día Internacional de la Mujer del Sector Marítimo

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has made important efforts so that women reach higher levels of representation within the maritime sector, an example of this was the creation of the Program for the Integration of Women in 1988, under which Associations have been formed of Women in the Maritime Sector (WIMA), in Africa, the Arab States, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America and the Pacific, covering 152 countries and 490 dependent territories, as platforms to discuss gender issues, share experiences and good practices, receive training and improve the implementation of IMO instruments. In accordance with the Program for the Integration of Women, the Network of Women of Maritime Authorities – Red MAMLa was established in December 2017, through the Declaration of Valparaíso and during the First Regional Conference held in Chile under the motto: “Women in the Maritime Authorities of Latin America and Central America”.

The MAMLa Network, of which Cuba is a member state, works to create more spaces and opportunities that promote the comprehensive development of women in the Latin American region, under the principles of Training, Visibility, Recognition and Empowerment, implementing through its members , the Strategic Axes in all the countries where it has representation.

This month of May 2022, has a note of pride for all the women who work in the various fields of the maritime industry, since, for the first time officially, the International Day of Women in the Maritime Sector will be celebrated.

The proposal accepted in November last year and subsequently approved at the IMO General Assembly held in December, set May 18 to recognize the work and participation of maritime, port and logistics women.

This recognition is an important achievement and we celebrate it with great satisfaction by thanking the PACWIMA Association (Pacific Women In Maritime Association), for all the efforts and work involved in promoting this initiative, to which Red MAMLA joined and joined forces with the community. Latin American Maritime Authority, both from the public and private sectors, to obtain the necessary support for their motion.

To commemorate this day, the International Maritime Organization - IMO, will hold a symposium with the theme: "Training-Visibility-Recognition: Empowerment of women in the maritime community", which seeks to emphasize the need for women to be more visible and integrated into the maritime community, both on board ships and at decision-making levels.

Likewise, on this date, from Cuba, we will also celebrate with the realization of a masterful event that will have the participation of outstanding women in their work in the different branches of the maritime port sector, who will expose their life stories and recommendations to empower the Cuban maritime woman.

In this way, this May 18 we will highlight the vast progress made by all women who, worldwide, make up the vast maritime world, in addition to renewing our commitment to continue working hard from the MAMLa Network Committee, encouraging female participation. in a visible way in the sector and creating opportunities that promote the development of the professional maritime activity of Latin American women.

We will continue to work hard and with determination, "...alone we are a drop, but together we form an ocean". Congratulations to all our Maritime, Port and Logistics Women!
